The witch’s cave was filled with many curious trinkets and unusual smells. Herbs, dried and hung from the ceiling and stacked in jars filled every surface the eye could see. The cave was dimly lit, but warm. Small candles flickered here and there, among the wild papers and objects that even Ano did not know the purpose of; sticks, strange stones, and mysterious carvings. There were many things to marvel at here, but Ano’s attention could not be broken from his worry. The two kukuri huddled over the table, where the precious third laid still. Ano hovered, watching closely the actions of the witch. She worked quickly, only pausing to rest her hand on the pup's chest– Ano’s daughter, his firstborn. She was so small, and so pale. Her breaths were weak, flickering. She had only hatched a few days prior. Everything had been fine. Ano didn’t know what went wrong. She was healthy and beautiful, with sparkling white fur. She ate like a bear, and he couldn’t keep her in the nest for long. But
